Fund Aids Development Efforts
in Southeast Asia
AIMS
News: Posted 4/1/2005
During
the weeks following the Asian tsunami disaster, hundreds
of non-profit, humanitarian, and government organizations
rushed to provide emergency relief to the several Southeast
Asian countries that were devastated by the tsunami.
In the first few months following the tragedy, millions
of dollars have been given to help the countries in
Southeast Asia. But emergency relief is just the beginning
of a much larger problem.
As
the initial step of emergency relief draws to a close,
AIMS decided to focus its efforts on providing development
aid for the four countries most damaged by the tsunami:
Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India. As of this
printing, AIMS has raised $60,000 to assist our partners
working in each of these areas. These funds will be
used to aid development in the following areas:
India:
Hindustan Bible Institute (Chennai, India) will help
two fishing villages redevelop their industries. They
have agreed to use AIMS funding to purchase a boat and
a set of nets for each village.
Sri
Lanka: AIMS has partnered with Globe Missionary
Evangelism to start a program to provide clothing and
school books for children in one of the areas damaged
by the tsunami.
Thailand:
One of our partners in Thailand is currently working
among Unreached People Groups in a province on the southern
west coast of the country. They want to use the funding
to help one village rebuild after the tsunami. Assistance
includes purchasing items such as crab and fish traps,
repairing motors and boats, and supplying water purifiers
for the village.
Indonesia:
AIMS will allocate a large portion of the funding to
our church partners in Indonesia who are already working
in the Aceh Province, which was most heavily damaged
by the tsunami. Funding will go towards meeting the
areaís most crucial development needs: providing
building materials for housing, redeveloping businesses
and fishing industries, supplying materials to rebuild
schools, sponsoring health clinics, and purchasing needed
items such as food and clothing for a village or internally
displaced persons camp.
Continue
to pray for the people in these regions. The needs are
great, and as the development process continues, more
opportunities to help will arise.
