Global
Encounter Encourages Teens in Virginia
to Get Involved in Missions
AIMS
News: Posted 6/1/2006
AIMS
reached out to the hearts of youth in the United States
with the first Global Encounter
held at Mount Zion Fellowship Church in Suffolk, VA,
on February 25, 2006. Modeled after Harvest Connection,
Global Encounter mobilizes
youth and young adults within the United States to minister
domestically and abroad cross-culturally.
"By
getting youth involved with interactive activities that
show them the importance of missionary work, they will
take an interest in cross-cultural missions," says
"Philip", AIMS Team Strategy Coordinator and
Director of Philip 8.4.8 and Global Encounter.
Mount
Zion Fellowship Church hosted a weekend retreat to help
its youth "encounter God, His purpose, and His
world." Thirteen teens attended. The youth learned
what an unreached people group is and how many there
are in the world. Global Encounter
leaders split the youth up into smaller groups to have
open discussion followed by individual time to log their
thoughts in a journal. They also ministered to the youth
through various music venues.
" God wants you to use your gifts and talents to
reach the world," said one of the Global
Encounter leaders, who challenges teenagers
through rap.
As
a result, participants were inspired to getting involved
in missions work; they even fasted that weekend for
missions. During the five hour session, the teens were
also moved to volunteer a portion of their summer vacations
to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The pastor
of Mount Zion plans to take the youth group to Dearborn,
MI, this June to minister with Philip 8.4.8.
Right
now, Global Encounter facilitators
are reaching out to high school students but hope to
soon expand onto college campuses as well. Youth who
are excited about missions while they are still in high
school will likely continue their ministry through college
programs. AIMS is currently scheduling other churches
for subsequent Global Encounters.
